“Local law enforcement by the community and for the community”

My name is Joe Nole and I am running for the office of Jefferson County Sheriff. I currently hold the position of Detective at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

I have been involved in law enforcement in Jefferson County for the past 35 years. Twenty-eight years with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and seven years as a Backcountry Ranger with the United States Forest Service on the Quilcene Ranger District.

While employed at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office I have held the positions of Patrol Deputy, Detective, Chief Criminal Deputy, Appointed Sheriff, and Undersheriff.

I grew up in Tacoma and have lived in Jefferson County for the past 33 years. Teri, my wife of 40 years, and I started and raised our family here. Our daughters, Katie, Emily, and Polly have been lifelong county residents and attended the local public schools.

I graduated from The Evergreen State College in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Ecology and was offered employment as a Backcountry Ranger with the United States Forest Service on the Quilcene Ranger District. I did not know it at the time, but I began my career in law enforcement there, living out of a two-person tent in the Buckhorn Wilderness of Jefferson County. My duties were to greet and care for the public, protect the environment, and enforce the law. When you are working solo enforcing the law where backup is likely six to eight hours away and your portable radio often does not reach civilization, you learn how to prevent problems before they happen, positively engage with the public, use diplomacy, choose your battles wisely, and step up to the plate when required.

In 1986 I returned to college and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Washington University in secondary education with a Biology major and Chemistry minor. During the summers I continued my Backcountry Ranger duties on the Quilcene Ranger District.

I taught high school biology and chemistry for a couple of years and realized that teaching was not the profession for me. But what I learned and experienced as a teacher about patience, understanding, listening to others, and thoughtfulness helped to improve me as a law enforcement officer.

I sincerely care about the people living in this community. My family and I are part of it. I am dedicated to this community and the people that comprise it and take the job of Sheriff, and the impact the Sheriff’s office can have on the community, very seriously. I firmly believe it is the Sheriff’s responsibility to thoughtfully enforce laws and oversee the administration of scarce county tax dollars and personnel in a professional, responsible manner.

I strongly believe that short comings in our society have a direct impact on community problems and struggles and want to use the office of Sheriff to address those issues and make local improvements where I can.

I am running for Sheriff to promote and maintain a positive law enforcement presence in our community. I will ensure a caring, trustworthy, helpful, and dependable group of deputies and corrections staff that treat others how they would want to be treated and how they would want their loved ones treated.

I have proven leadership and the ability to partner with the community and other agencies and am proud to say I have done so throughout my career.

My 35 years of local law enforcement experience in Jefferson County has prepared me to take this next step in making a positive difference in our community.
